As Quanzhou intensifies its efforts to be recognized as a " City of Gastronomy," the renowned local artist and chief art editor of Quanzhou Evening News, Hong Zhixiong, has dedicated himself to creating a monumental artwork, The Flavors of Diverse Culture. After two weeks of tireless work, this art scroll vividly portrays the rich culinary heritage of Quanzhou, assisting the city in its bid for this prestigious title.

The scroll is a fine depiction, carefully illustrating over a hundred characters and numerous iconic Quanzhou dishes. Among them are dishes such as oyster omelet, fish rolls, pig's blood soup, and sweet rice cakes. These culinary representations reflect Quanzhou's unique ability to blend ingredients from both the mountains and the sea. The scroll also features Quanzhou's famous snacks, including the region's well-known sweet confections like Quanzhou tribute candy and Yongchun kumquat, all of which evoke feelings of nostalgia and resonate deeply with local viewers.

"This artwork is tailor-made for Quanzhou's bid to become a 'City of Gastronomy.' In terms of artistic technique, I've combined the traditional Chinese long scroll style with vibrant color painting, creating a visual language that reflects Quanzhou's innovative food culture, drawing inspiration from the past while embracing the present," Hong Zhixiong explained. "Within the piece, I've included five 'Afu' (Fortune) figures, symbolizing 'blessings coming to the door,' a traditional auspicious motif. Additionally, the Eight Immortals are depicted rushing to Quanzhou's gastronomic scene aboard a dragon boat, symbolizing the theme of 'Eight Immortals crossing the sea, eager to savor the fragrant offerings of ancient Quanzhou.'"

Having grown up immersed in the lively atmosphere of Quanzhou, Hong has a deep affection for both the city's landscape and cuisine. Over the years, his observations have allowed him to capture the unique spirit of the ancient city. Through his brush, he aims to depict Quanzhou's mountains, streets, folk customs, and local dishes, hoping to bring forth the true essence of this culturally rich city.

"This work,  The Flavors of Diverse Culture, is not only a tribute to Quanzhou's bid for 'City of Gastronomy,' but also an attempt to capture the remarkable popularity and vibrant atmosphere of the city in recent years," Hong Zhixiong added. "Quanzhou deserves to be seen and experienced by more people."
